Every good table has one vessel that never sits still — the one that gets lifted, tipped, and passed all evening. This is built to be that jug: a broad-bellied carved carafe with a proper handle, thrown by hand in our Ukrainian workshop and finished with fire and milk instead of glaze. Fill it once and it serves the whole table.

Built for the Work of Serving

A serving jug takes more handling in one night than a cup sees in a week, so this one is made for it. The belly is broad and low, keeping the weight near the table when it's full; the handle is pulled by hand from the same clay and set high on the shoulder, so the jug tips forward into a clean pour instead of fighting your wrist. The lip is shaped to cut the stream without a drip.

Milk firing is what makes it last. After the first firing, the jug is coated in milk and fired again — the milk caramelises into the porous clay and seals the surface from within, no glaze, so a vessel handled and washed constantly holds up for years. That second firing also deepens the body to a dark russet.

The Carved Band

And that dark body is exactly what makes the carving read. Around the belly runs a wide ribbon of pale slip, cut through freehand with a bold flourish of leaves and blossoms, standing out in relief against the darker clay. It's cut into wet clay one stroke at a time, so the rhythm shifts as it travels the piece — no stamp, no transfer. It's the most elaborate carving on any jug we make, and it turns a serving vessel into a centrepiece that holds a shelf on its own between meals.

Handmade, so small variations of a few millimetres are part of it.

Materials

Natural red clay, fired hard — the brown is the iron in the clay drawn out by heat, not a stain. The milk-fired finish is the only surface treatment, and it is food safe. Unglazed, breathable, and free of glaze, lead and industrial coatings.

Care

• Hand wash only — never the dishwasher
• Rinse soon after use rather than letting contents stand
• Soft sponge or cloth; baking soda for anything stubborn
• Avoid strong detergents, which porous clay can absorb
• No long soaking
• Dry fully before storing
• Keep out of long, direct sunlight to preserve the tone

Cared for this way, the jug lasts for years and deepens in colour as it goes.
