A Bottle You Actually Cork

Most decorative pottery bottles are for show — this one is built to be filled, corked, and put away with spirits still inside. A ribbed clay bottle sealed with a real cork, thrown by hand in our Ukrainian workshop, paired with six small cups sized for a proper shot. It's the set that comes down from the shelf when someone says try this one, I made it.

What Makes This Bottle Different

Two things set it apart from any other bottle we make, and both are functional.

It's glazed on the inside. The outside is milk-fired for the warm rustic look — coated in milk after the first firing and fired again, so the surface darkens and seals without a coat of glaze. But the inside is finished with a smooth black glaze, which makes the bottle genuinely liquid-tight and easy to rinse. That combination is deliberate: the rough, breathing character of milk-fired clay where you see and hold it, and a proper sealed interior where spirits actually sit. It's a bottle meant to hold horilka, vodka or an infusion for the long haul, not just to look the part.

It closes with a real cork. Where our other bottles use a turned ceramic stopper, this one takes a natural cork bound with twine — the closure of a spirits flask, not an ornament. It seals tight for storing and travels well.

The Ribbed Body

Run a thumb up the bottle and you feel it: deep concentric cord-ribbing running the full height, throwing lines pulled proud instead of smoothed away. It catches light in horizontal bands and gives the whole piece a woven, rope-wrapped look you don't get from a smooth wall. The narrow neck pours a slow, controlled measure — exactly what you want filling small cups with something strong.

The Six Cups

Small, straight-sided and held in the palm — 40 ml, the size of a shot. Each carries its own pattern of dark milk-fired smoke over warm amber, and no two match. They're the drinking half of the set: you pour from the corked bottle into these, round after round.

Why Milk-Fired Clay for Spirits

Because it stays out of the way. There's no glaze on the outside and none of its taste; the cups are unglazed where the drink meets clay, so a good horilka or infusion keeps its own character and picks up nothing. The clay wall also holds temperature, so a chilled pour stays cold through a slow evening of small measures.

Handmade, so expect small variations between pieces and a different pattern on every cup.

Materials

Natural red clay, fired hard — the brown is the iron in the clay drawn out by heat. Milk-fired finish on the outside, food-safe black glaze on the inside of the bottle. The cups are unglazed and food safe. Free of lead and industrial coatings.

Care

• Hand wash only — never the dishwasher
• Rinse soon after use rather than letting contents stand
• Soft sponge or cloth; baking soda for anything stubborn
• Avoid strong detergents, which the porous cup clay can absorb
• No long soaking
• Dry fully before storing; keep the cork out of the neck so both dry through
• Store out of long, direct sunlight

Cared for this way, the set lasts for years and deepens in tone.
